Each day people drive their car but most have no idea how the car runs. It is hard enough for many people to find enough time to get their car to an auto mechanic to have it checked over from time to time. It isn't difficult to have the outlook, out of sight, out of mind, but just because the electrical system is out of sight, does not mean that it doesn't need to be maintained.

The electrical system of a vehicle is essentially a collection of wires. Even so, the big picture is that these wires are necessary in supplying the electricity the car needs to run. The car or truck's power system is quite sophisticated as it features a battery, starter, voltage regulator, solenoid, generator and fuse panel. The battery may be the principle element of the car, but others are equally necessary. The electrical demands of the system are generally powered by a 12-volt battery.

The generator or alternator continuously charges the battery power. The alternator is attached to the engine using a belt which recharges the battery and keeps the car moving. Electrical energy that is produced by the battery is transferred to the starter to start the car. Thus if the battery has no charge, your car won't start. That's the reason the battery is considered to be so important, because without it, nothing in the car works. The electric battery also powers all the interior features as well like the radio, clock and alarm.

You'll notice six cells in the battery that are divided by positive and negative plates via insulators. They are immersed in an electrolyte substance comprised of water and sulfuric acid. The alternator also generates electricity which powers the engine controls and ignition. AC power becomes converted into DC power through the belt-driven alternator. The component of the car that uses the most electricity is the starter. The energy is administered and controlled by the solenoid and also ignition switch. Once you get into your car and switch on the ignition switch, a lot happens, quite quickly to make your car start.

All of the electrical parts of the car hooks up to the all-important fuse panel. There's a multitude of fuses that protect your vehicle from short circuits and overloads. With a basic knowledge of the electrical system, you will have an understanding of what repairs need to be made when the time comes.
