I have heard a lot of stories about people being misled by these. I can only hope that some of these stories are exaggerated. I heard one story of a person driving into a lake because the GPS told them to. This is more the persons fault than the machines if it is true.
There have been many instances, some of which I have witnessed myself, when a GPS system has said there was a rod where there wasn't. These systems have billions of bits of information pre-loaded on them before you ever purchase it. They were also programmed by humans who make mistakes. This does happen.
GPS systems can be wonderful for every day use. If you have a job where you often have to drive in unfamiliar territory then these can save you time and that may save you money as well. I have been in situations for work where I was completely lost and desperate for directions.
A GPS will tell you where to turn and when with only minimal information input from you. Weather it's an address or the name of a business you can find your destination easily. They will even tell you the quickest route, how far you have to go, and if needed an alternate route.
They can even tell you exactly where you are at if you are unsure. This can be of great help especially in an emergency. Consider buying GPS mapping systems for every driver in your family if for no other reason than to know they are safe.
