The Kyocera FS-1700 Plus printer is a bit unlike most printers in that it doesn't use a traditional drum and toner setup, for one. This is just one aspect of this high-quality and durable network printer that helps it to stand apart just a bit from other printers in its market segment. This is for the good, as this Kyocera printer using FS-1700 Plus Printer Cartridge seems well-suited to most any business.

In building the FS-1700 Plus Printer Cartridge, they started using what the company calls EcoSys. What it really does is help to give the printer a capacity of over three years and 300,000 sheets of printing capability. That also gives it a far lower cost per page than its peers, though the Kyocera will cost a bit more initially.

Print clarity and resolution is more than acceptable at 600 by 600 dpi, which gives it excellent quality for almost any print task. Kyocera has included a 66 MHz processor and 24 megabytes of RAM, which can easily be upgraded with little effort to a total of 66 megabytes. It also works with MS operating systems up through Windows 98, NT 3.51 and Mac OS 7.5 or higher. Indeed, this laser monochrome printer is ready to go.

Weighing in at a relatively light 14 kilograms (31 or so pounds), the Kyocera can be easily relocated if need be. It's also nicely proportioned and can hold a hefty 350 sheets of paper within its included tray. There's an optional duplex printer capability available as well. The warranty is standard for the industry at one year, and it can be lengthened for additional charge, though it shouldn't need much more than normal maintenance.

The printer also takes the most common paper sizes (letter, legal and A4) and can print out 12 pages per minute. It can print on transparencies, labels and plain paper and it interfaces through standard bidirectional parallel and serial ports. These are a bit dated in this day and age but are also very durable, so that's a point in its favor.

If it's going to be integrated into an office environment, it's going to require a 220/240 volt outlet in order to run, so keep that in mind before purchasing. Most standard printers in this segment utilize 110/120 volt, which puts this model out of the mainstream just a bit. This can be justified because the Kyocera has the lowest cost per page of any printer in its segment, by far.

Making use of another proprietary capability the company calls EcoMemory, the Kyocera can compress its memory so efficiently that its effective usable memory at any one time can be increased by an appreciable amount. All of these capabilities combine to give it years more life than just about any other printer in its comparison group, it must be said.

The Kyocera Printer Toner works equally as well as a small office printer toner or a small network printer toner, and with its extremely long duty cycle, it delivers a far lower cost-per-page ratio than any other printer in its class. Add in its solid build and quality construction and there's pretty much nothing to dislike about this particular machine.
