To many people cosmetic surgery means ‘going under the knife'; in other words being operated on by a surgeon who removes excess fatty tissue or perhaps reshapes particular parts of the body, such as the nose.
However cosmetic surgery is more than this. It is a medical procedure that covers a lot of remedies, not all of which are so demanding. One of these is Botox treatment. This strange term is actually a trade name, but it is also a reference to a chemical called Botulinum Toxin Type A which is itself a derivative of a bacterium called Clostridium Botulinum.
Botox
Botulinum Toxin Type A or Botox for short is used for a variety of non surgical cosmetic treatments including reducing the size of wrinkles and frown lines. It is also being offered by a growing number of dentists as an addition to the normal dental care you would get. But you should be aware that not all dentists will be qualified to give such treatments, so it is worth checking before undergoing anything like this.
That said it is generally believed that dentists are the most appropriate people to visit for Botox therapy as they are more used to giving injections of this type under local anaesthetic.
Although a toxin is used, this is not a problem. Botox is safe. The procedure is also relatively quick and painless, taking around 10 minutes to administer. You will need to return to the dentist on a regular basis however to ensure the course is complete. This is usually about 3 - 4 months since the results of Botox injections take time to become fully effective.
Signs of ageing
Botox treatment works by reducing the constant muscle activity which produces such features as Crows feet and frown lines. The toxin is injected directly into the muscles between the eye brows, which in turn causes temporary paralysis of the muscles.
Once you have had treatment you should start to see the difference in your appearance as early as two to three days. It is also advisable though to have regular ongoing medical care; the effects are not permanent. The wrinkles and lines will return.
Some people worry about whether Botox is truly painless. In truth, there will be some discomfort but as the needles used in the procedure are so small this will be minimal. In any event, dentists will treat the area with a local anaesthetic in the same way they do when removing or filling teeth. The anaesthetic is also usually a cream and not an injection.
Potential side-effects
Although Botox treatment is safe there are a number of known side effects. These may include local pain, tenderness or inflammation. It is also possible that as a result of the injection itself the surrounding area could become infected; it may also bleed.
Some patients also report nausea or temporary eyelid drooping.
If you are thinking of having Botox treatment, it should be realised that currently it is only offered to patients between 18 and 65. The costs can also vary from dentist to dentist.
