Mary, a sixty five year old woman, sometimes wonder why she has so many bruises. She can't remember ever hitting or running into anything. But, every time she looks down, she sees a bruise on her arm. Mary tries to recall her day in her head, but she can't imagine when she acquired a bruise. It seems as though bruises have been getting easier to acquire as she got older. Mary decides to see a doctor because she can't understand why bruises have been forming so easily on her body.

Like many older people, Jane notices that she bruises easier as she grows older. In fact, bruising is more common as age increases. Bruises form when your capillaries break as a result to an impact. Once you are a certain age, it won't take a heavy fall or a hit by the door to leave a large bruise anymore.

After a person's capillary is damaged, the small blood vessels release a certain amount of blood. When this blood is released, a reddish-brown spot or mark appears. This mark or spot is called a bruise. Although bruises occur at any age, bruises are more common among older people. But, not to worry, bruises diminish naturally.

As people get older, the body tissues weaken and the capillaries become easier to break. Another age factor is the thickness of your skin. When age increases, your skin becomes thinner. The skin also loses some of the protective layer that helps protect it against injuries. Without this layer, your body is more prone to damage. Thus, without a strong protective layer, your skin is easier to bruise.

A bruise is not something to get stressed about. Unless serious bruising occurs, bruises are not a serious medical problem. Bruises typically only last for a few days; there is no need to visit a doctor unless extreme bruising occurs. Medications such as Aspirin, Coumadin, and Plavix thin blood and increase bruising. However, no one should stop consuming these medications without the consent of a doctor.

Other supplements that are linked to bruising are: Fish oil, Ginger, Garlic, and Ginkgo. These supplements are said to prevent blood clots, however they do have a blood thinning effect. Thus, these supplements shouldn't be consumed in large quantities if you are trying to reducing bruising.

Along with age, sunlight is a huge contributor to bruising. Those who have lived their lives under the sun should be aware of this. An excess amount of sunlight doesn't only cause wrinkles, it increases bruising as well. Basically, too much sun exposure weakens the blood vessel walls and negatively impacts the skin.

Depending on the person, bruises may be easy to acquire at any age. However, bruises are most common in older women than in any other age or gender group. There are no true ways to eliminate a bruise completely, but there are precautions people can take to prevent getting excessive bruises. There are also several ways in which one can reduce the appearance of a bruise. It is only natural for a person to bruise easier as they get older. So, the next time you see a bruise on your own body... Don't worry!
