The idea of taking yoga lessons is appealing to many people for many reasons. Being beneficial for stress relief is one of the most frequent reasons. It is also great for overall health, especially for people suffering from back pain. Once you start looking around, though, you will find that there can be an overwhelming choice of classes, depending on where you live.

Hatha yoga is one of the oldest style of yogas and most of the others are based on it. This style of yoga is very gentle. It focuses on holding positions and incorporates the use of proper breathing. This is one of the best styles for both relaxation and rehabilitation. There are asanas or poses that can help your internal organs as well and boost your immunity. Sivananda yoga is a popular derivative of Hatha yoga.

Bikram yoga is another common style. These classes are held in a hot room, from 85 to as high as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat makes the muscles warmer and therefore easier to stretch. Another goal of this style is cleansing. If you take this style, be sure to keep yourself drinking water as you can become dehydrated due to the heat.

If you are the type of person that cannot slow down, you might want to opt for starting out with Power yoga. This style, which is a newer type of Yoga, comes from Ashtanga yoga. It will challenge you more physically than the other styles. It is faster paced so it feels like a harder workout.

It is best if you can take classes with a professional yoga teacher if possible. It is a gentle exercise compared to some but you can still injure yourself if you do not perform the poses the right way. Try to avoid competition with other people in your classes. Do as much as you can for that day and no more. Good instructors motivate but know when not to push for more than you are able to do.

Yoga is especially beneficial when practiced early in the morning or later in the evening. First thing, it helps you to set a relaxed tone for the rest of your day. Later, it can help you shake off the stress of your day and improve your sleep.

The best scenario is to do yoga both in the morning and the evening. The muscles benefit from this as well as stretching in the morning helps warm the muscles up after a night of inactivity. At night, they get their last stretch before that inactivity begins again. By stretching at both times, you keep your muscles looser and more flexible and help prevent injury.

Whichever type of yoga you choose, you will get benefit. The key is to find one that you like and begin taking classes. In addition to the style, a teacher that appeals to you will also help your motivation to return to the class so that a regular practice is established.
