Asbestos is a naturally occurring compound that is highly useful. It has been used extensively in industries for many purposes. Cement manufacturing units and ship building companies have been using it on a large scale. The use of asbestos increased since'40s and many people were engaged in its extraction, processing and related activities. But the link between mesothelioma and asbestos was not found out till'60s. Hence no precautionary measures were taken by the company owners and no restrictions were imposed by the government to protect the workers from inhaling or ingesting the harmful fibers floating in the air.

This led to a very harmful situation of workers inhaling or carrying asbestos particles in their cloths or hair. They went home without showering or changing the cloths and brought the particles to their homes thereby exposing family members too. Thus many family members also got infected. Once the harmful properties of asbestos came to fore, curbs were instituted on the usage of asbestos with some countries banning its use altogether. But the harm was already done. Most present mesothelioma patients had got infected several decades ago when no curbs and precautionary measures were existent.

Asbestos particles, once in through the air we inhale, get deposited in the protective lining of the lungs and other vital organs and set off chemical reactions which results in abnormal and uncontrolled dividing of mesothelium cells. Long years of this activity result in the infection spreading and appearance of cancer symptoms. This is why mesothelioma and asbestos are always spelt in the same breath.

Mesothelioma is the deadliest of all diseases like lung cancer caused by asbestos. Various precautionary measures are taken these days like wearing protective masks, bathing and changing cloths at work place etc. In spite of this mesothelioma cases are still reported, though rarely. About 3000 people are diagnosed of carrying this disease every year in United States alone. The number would be much more around the world. The sorry state of affairs is that in spite of the link between mesothelioma and cancer many countries have not made asbestos laws and unscrupulous employers still exploit workers to satisfy their greed.

Most of the governments have been sympathetic towards the plight of victims considering the connection between mesothelioma and asbestos. Laws are formulated to help the victims to claim money from the employers which can assist them in the financial crisis occurred due to the disease.
