If your dog is not listening to your commands, may be your training is not the cause. It could be that your dog has an alpha personality and he is challenging your position as a leader. Learning how to manage the alpha dog may take time but is worthwhile in order to establish a lasting and caring relationship.

An alpha dog has a dominant personality and would have led the pack in a natural setting. Two dogs will lead any pack: an alpha male and an alpha female. An alpha male is often more dominant than an alpha female. If you are female you may find that an alpha male may still try and dominate you because in a natural setting he'll become before the female alpha.

The position any animal in the pack establishes everything from eating order to the right to mate. In a dog pack, the alpha female is the one who has the puppies and all other females take care of the puppies. In a wild canine pack, the more dominant dogs eat first and the less dominant dogs eat after them.

Because a dog sees its family as its new pack, he will try to carry over his position to the family setting. This does not mean that an alpha dog cannot be a good pet. It just means that it will need a bit more obedience training to get it to accept a non-leadership role. Learning a few key tricks will help you establish your role as the pack leader and your dog will be more obedient as time goes on.

Because canine behavior is so deeply ingrained, you may want to train your dog taking this into account. You can educate him much quicker by communicating in his language. This does not mean you need to learn how to bark or replicate animal behavior, it simply means that you combine dog communication with standard obedience techniques.

A lot of pack hierarchy can be shown through food. Feeding an alpha dog last and making it shake your hand before you hand over the food bowl can be a great way to show you are in charge. It may seem strange to think about hand feeding a dog, but in the beginning it teaches an alpha dog that you are the person that the food comes from and that it must obey you for food. Food is one of the most powerful motivators for dogs. You should also pat it on top of the head because this will show it you are more dominant. The last trick is to roll him over and expose its stomach. Teaching him to roll over can be very helpful. Exposing its stomach to you is the ultimate sign of submission.

Work with your dog to manage its alpha tendencies, and you will be rewarded with a changed dog. You'll be amazed what a wonderful companion you can end up with.
