The ancient custom and traditions are an essential part of China and as such they take a lot of pride in them. The whole of China together wish to maintain these activities related to their traditions and as such celebrate them from time to time with aim of carrying them forward.

New Year is one time in China when you will observe all types of traditional activities. In fact at this time most of what the Chinese people do is related to their ancient customs. There are a number of things that the Chinese indulge in which are a part of welcoming a New Year. You will witness many strange customs which will bring this fact to light that Chinese are certainly a race who have preserved their culture well.

There is however another motive why China has kept these ancient traditions alive. With the explosion of the mass media the country knows how intrigued the rest of the world is by their mysterious culture. Hence they aim to cash in on their ancient traditions by keeping them alive so that they can attract lots of tourists and hence develop a thriving tourism industry.

The New Year celebrations once they commence carry on for next fifteen days. In fact the celebrations start one two days previous to the New Year. If you are keen to do business in China this is a good time as people love to spend a lot as they are so happy.

The cleaning of home is an important part of the tradition. The new things are bought and displayed and old and useless things are thrown away in the hope that it purifies the home atmosphere and bring luck in the coming year.

The practice of coloring the doors and windows in brilliant red has a deeper meaning which has to do with the Chinese New Year. They firmly believe that the red color will save them from coming to harm and keep all sort of evil spirit away.

The New Year is the time when the Chinese decorate their homes with various items which have traditional significance. Things like couplets and paper cuttings are supposed to bring prosperity and happiness. They have various other things like paintings, scrolls and wall paper designs as a part of their decorative items.

New Year's Eve is a special night according to Chinese tradition and is observed in the traditional method in full passion. All family members come together for supper where they eat jiaozi which is a popular New Year dish consisting of dumplings in boiled water.

Once the whole family is together they eat the dinner and then play a lot of games to keep themselves awake the whole night. In the present times they even watch television which telecasts special program for New Year. They also think that if they keep the lights burning the whole night their parents will have a long life.

The real day begins with good wishes, presents, lantern parades, Kung fu acts, concerts and other various forms of celebrations that last a whole two weeks and end with the dragon dance with the fireworks on the night of the first full moon putting an end to the show of ancient traditions in modern times.
