Normally, Valentine's Day is the most excellent of times for people in a romance. But if you're not with the one you love, it can be one of the unhappiest ones. Here are some budget-minded ways to celebrate Valentine's Day that can have you both feeling closer to each other than ever.

Set up an e-card account. There are free and low-cost Web sites that can send a special illustrated or animated e-mail with a personalized message sent every single day!

Have your Valentine's Day dinner online. All you need is a web camera and mic, which aren't too expensive, and a Skype account, which is without charge. Dress up (or down!), plan the menu, log on at the appointed time, light candles, open the presents you've sent, and talk. You could even watch a romantic movie together first!

If you're sending a gift parcel to your partner early, be sure to mark it, "Do NOT Open Until Valentines Day, February 14." If you're scheduling a phone or online meeting, be sure to add your mate's local time if you'd like to be there when he or she opens it.

Need a suggestion for the Valentine's Day card? Get on the Web or go to the library, and look up how to say "I Love You" in as many diverse languages as you can find: French, Croatian, Turkish, Italian, Yoruba, Pig Latin...

But don't just doodle on the CD with a marker - go to a stationery store and download templates of CD package inserts, and write out a detailed set list. Use a photograph of the two of you for the CD cover.

And as a bonus, there's something else that you can make a gift-wrapped CD out of:
